BROOKLYN BRIDGE: WAR OF THE WORLDS {PARTS 1 AND 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about a middle-class Jewish family living in Brooklyn, New York, in the 1950s.
In this two-part episode, George sends Alan and Nathaniel out to get ice cream for the family. While the boys are at Sid's, Lt. Patrick Monahan stops by. When Katie then enters the shop, Alan and Nathaniel realize that he is her father. Alan is nervous to meet him, while the lieutenant is curious about the relationship between Katie and Alan.
Later, Nathaniel wonders why Katie's father doesn't seem to like Alan. Alan speaks with George about differing religions. The next day, Alan gets a call from Katie, who reveals that her father has forbid them to date. Afterward, Alan addresses the situation with Benny and Warren. In Mr. Greer's class, everyone discusses the recent presidential election and question why Eisenhower won in a landslide over Stevenson. The talk of differing political beliefs leads to Alan analyzing his situation with Katie.
Mr. Greer helps Alan realize that he needs to have his family meet with Katie's parents. Alan is sure that they will quickly learn to like each other. Both Alan and Katie ask their families and soon a dinner is arranged. One night, after elaborate preparations, the Silvers and Monahans meet at a Chinese restaurant. Things are initially tense as the families struggle to converse. Further conflicts arise over the food ordering and prayers before the meal, with Phyllis and Katie's mother, Rosemary, trying to mediate.
Then, the Silvers' loud and obnoxious relatives -- Uncle Willy and Aunt Miriam -- arrive, causing a scene. Eventually, the situation is so uncomfortable that Patrick wants to leave. Katie thinks they should all discuss what they have in common, but no one can think of anything.
Afterward, Alan is upset for having arranged the embarrassing dinner. Meanwhile, Phyllis, Rosemary, and Katie discuss the matter in the bathroom. At the same time, Patrick and George finally find a common thread, a man they both know and like from their boyhoods in Williamsburg. Thus, the Monahans and the Silvers take one final shot at dinner. The dinner ends up a success, with both families learning things they didn't know about each other's culture. Finally, Sophie and Patrick exchange gifts: record albums of their family's traditional music. Commercials deleted. This program is closed-captioned.
