Summary

This documentary reviews the life of German businessman Oskar Schindler and the efforts he made to save the lives of over one thousand Jews during World War II. Jewish people who recall their experiences during this period include Moshe Bejski, Ludwik Fiegenbaum, Helena Helsch, Rysard Horowitz, Eva Kisza, Joachim Kunstlinger, Mojesz Pantirer, Leopold Pfefferberg, Ludmilla Pfefferberg, Ryszard Rechen, Herman Rosner, Manci Rosner, Irena Scheck, and Solomon Urbach. They discuss the following topics: Schindler's lifestyle; the way the Nazis treated the Jews; how Schindler managed to keep the SS from taking his workers away; Schindler's efforts to protect his workers; death camps; SS officer Goeth, who ran the concentration camp in Krakow; getting onto "Schindler's list"; surviving Auschwitz; how Schindler reached the Swiss border safely at the end of the war; and the many ways in which Schindler helped the Jews.

In addition, Emilie Schindler recalls how her husband dealt with SS officers through bribery and charm and Ruth Kalder, Goeth's mistress, defends Goeth's actions. Also included is footage of the following: Hitler making his announcement that Germany is going to invade Poland; Jewish workers in concentration camps; Jews in the synagogues that were closed down or destroyed during the war; Nazi soldiers marching Jews from their homes; Nazi soldiers raiding the ghettoes; the barracks where Jews were kept; dead and emaciated victims of the death camps; Winston Churchill announcing the end of the war; Schindler's funeral in Israel; children being released from Auschwitz; and Schindler's grave. The following are displayed in still photos: Schindler as a child and as an adult; the factories Schindler ran; Goeth; trains to Auschwitz; gas chambers; the prison cell where Schindler was held during the war; and Schindler and his Jewish protectors, who got him safely to the Swiss border.
