MIAMI VICE: SHADOW IN THE DARK (TV)

Summary

One in this series of police dramas concerning Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, undercover detectives for the Miami vice squad. This episode opens with The Shadow breaking into a condo and then slathering himself with flour before eating some raw meat. The next morning, Crockett and Tubbs arrive on the mysterious burglary scene and meet with Lt. Ray Gilmore, who notes that ten other home have been hit in a similar manner recently. Gilmore notes that the burglar only steals pairs of pants. He also writes on walls with stolen lipstick. Then, Gilmore shows them what he drew in the kitchen. Later, the hotheaded Gilmore gets in a scrape with some locals before insulting Crockett and Tubbs. That night, Gilmore forces Crockett and Tubbs to work late, searching through files. They begin to think he's "strung out." Then, Castillo tells Crockett and Tubbs that Gilmore wants them off the case. The next day, Gilmore delivers a letter to Crockett and Tubbs telling them that he resents them butting in on his case. He then accompanies the detectives on a visit to George Wyatt, a former burglar, to see if he has any information on The Shadow. Gilmore quickly flames out and attacks George, after which he's taken into custody. Later, Crockett and Tubbs are called to a scene and find a woman who says a man is in her kitchen. Entering the premises, the cops find Gilmore there with a gun, claiming he trapped the burglar in the freezer. Gilmore is subsequently taken away. Later, The Shadow commits another break-in, this time in drag, while Crockett and Tubbs try to think like him. Castillo is concerned that The Shadow is moving closer to his victims with each new incident. That evening, Castillo meets with Crockett, who is having a nightcap to help him handle the tension of the case. Crockett thinks he is starting to figure out The Shadow. The Shadow begins permeating his dreams, making Crockett think he has been hiding along the bay. Tubbs is worried that Crockett is becoming as obsessed as Gilmore. However, that night, The Shadow threatens to sexually assault a woman in a bay area condo. Crockett and Tubbs speak with the young woman, who reveals that The Shadow made her get on a table and be covered in flour. Crockett feels like he has begun to figure out The Shadow's M.O. Castillo thinks it time for Crockett to bow out, however. Crockett begins to coat his face in flour, hoping to have a breakthrough. The next day, Crockett tells Tubbs of how they're going to "bag" The Shadow. Then, the police find a prowler, but Crockett quickly realizes it is a copycat. Soon, Gilmore calls Crockett and Tubbs down to the county jail, where he has been confined. Arriving there, Gilmore shows them another drawing which confirms Crockett's suspicions that the cops have the wrong man. Castillo wants to take Crockett off duty, but he insists that The Shadow will be making another burglary that very night. Crockett then figures out which house is about to be hit, a selection with which Gilmore agrees. Thus, Castillo sends the cops to the scene, where they find The Shadow wielding a knife. As "the wacko" is apprehended, he gloats to Crockett that he has entered his dreams. Later that night, the detective finds that statement to be all too true. Commercials deleted.
