MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SCREENING SERIES, THE: STORYBOOK PLAYHOUSE 2: PACKAGE 10 {PIPPI LONGSTOCKING; IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN; THE WIZARD}
Summary
Prepared for The Museum of Television & Radio screening series "Storybook Playhouse," this compilation of stories features works based upon the writings of Astrid Lindgren, Maurice Sendak, and Jack Kent. "Pippi Longstocking is a two-part presentation. In part one, Pippi Longstocking, a rambunctious, red-headed rich girl, lives out a series of adventures on her own while awaiting the return of her father -- a pirate who was lost at sea. In this episode, Pippi moves to a new house called Villa Villekulla and befriends the neighbor children, Tommy and Annika. Although she makes quite an impression on them with her wit, strength and unorthodox lifestyle, the new girl in town faces several challenges. She has no trouble defeating bullies and thwarting thieves, but Pippi's boorish behavior at a tea party brings her to the attention of Mrs. Prysselius, the vengeful mother of a bully she had dispatched, and coincidentally the chairwoman of the child welfare board. When she hears Mrs. Prysselius's plot to have her placed in a children's home, Pippi longs for her father to come to her rescue. In part two, Pippi's attempts at a formal education end in failure, but she becomes a hero when she braves a raging fire to save the lives of the town bullies. Pippi complicates her first day at school when she brings in her pet monkey, Mr. Nelson, and insists on telling tales of snake wrestling in India. She exhibits bravery, however, when she races to the aid of bullies Ben and Crandall, who are trapped in a burning barn. Her courage procures a dubious reward, though, when the mean Mrs. Prysselius -- the mother of one of the bullies -- decides she will raise the girl as her own. Pippi resists the arrangement, hoping for a reunion with her father. In Maurice Sendak's animated tale "In the Night Kitchen," a boy named Mickey hears strange noises in the middle of the night while he is trying to sleep. As he sits up to ask for quiet he falls out of bed and finds himself in the Night Kitchen where the chefs mistake him for milk and mix him into their batter. Mickey explains that he is not milk and kneads bread dough into the shape of an airplane. He flies to the top of a large milk jar and gets milk for the bakers so that they can complete their cake. In the animated tale "The Wizard," a wizard attempts to organize his bottle of spells in alphabetical order and comes across one bottle without a label. Then a depressed mouse arrives and explains that he is often mistreated. He no longer wants to be a mouse and wishes to buy a spell that will change him into something else. The wizard, wanting to be left alone to finish his work, gives the mouse the mysterious bottle free of charge and sends him on his way. As the mouse attempts to guess what he will turn into, he realizes that he would rather be a mouse than anything else. Happily, he returns the bottle to the wizard, who is surprised by the accomplishments of the spell.
