LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN {STEFFI GRAF, JON STEWART, DES'REE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk shows hosted by David Letterman. This program features tennis champion Steffi Graf; talk-show host Jon Stewart; pop singer Des'ree; a series of remotes with gold medal-winning archer Jay Barrs; a special filmed appearance by radio personality Rush Limbaugh; and the "King of Surf Guitar," Dick Dale, sitting in with the band. During his opening monologue, Letterman hurriedly exits the auditorium and runs to the basement to get "more Ted Kennedy jokes" from a joke storage room filled with labeled boxes of cue cards. After the monologue, Letterman proclaims it "Bow and Arrow Night" and presents the first in a series of segments seen throughout the show, in which Jay Barrs -- stationed outside the theater on 53rd Street -- shoots various objects, including a cardboard Letterman figure, a string of illuminated lightbulbs, a gumball machine, and a television set projecting an image of an archer's "bullseye" target. First guest Steffi Graf discusses her nervousness years before at meeting Letterman for the first time; her home town in Germany; Boris Becker, who grew up near there; driving 160 mph on the autobahn; and her tendency to injure herself when attempting to participate in sports other than tennis. During Graf's appearance, Letterman introduces a pre-taped mock commercial for "Big Ass Ham" starring Rush Limbaugh. Later, guest Jon Stewart talks about Ted Kennedy; a recent job as emcee for a "Model Olympics" athletic competition; and getting his cat neutered. Finally, after mentioning that Dale's music makes him feel like he's been drinking beer all day, Letterman introduces Des'ree, who sings "Love Will Save the Day," from her album, "I Ain't Movin'." Commercials deleted. (This tape has full commercial break blackouts, generally about two minutes long. The "Late Show" band plays on throughout blackout.)
