HERITAGE: CIVILIZATION AND THE JEWS, PART 9: INTO THE FUTURE (TV)
Summary
Part nine of this nine-part series, hosted by Abba Eban, which chronicles the origins, experiences, and contributions of the Jewish people. The conclusion of this series examines the post-World War II era and the struggles of the Jewish people to establish a state of their own. Topics covered include: the new breed of Jewish settlers, the Zionists, who sought to make a homeland out of Palestine; Palestine -- while under British rule-- as the national home for many Jews; Britain's promise to keep up support for the Jews in Palestine, but how eventually, feeling pressure from the Arab nations, Britain began blocking off passage to Palestine; how the Jewish community began remaking the land and the growth of the city of Tel-Aviv; the United Nations vote to partition the land and make it into two separate states, one for Jews and the other for Arabs; how when Britain promptly pulled out of Palestine, fighting started between the Jews and the Arabs; the formation of a civilian army by the Jews as war raged with the Arabs; the creation of an Israeli state on May 14, 1948, as the British pulled out; how the Israeli flag took its place at the United Nations; the city of Jerusalem as the center of the Jewish state to which people flocked from everywhere; Jerusalem viewed not as a refuge, but as a place to restore Jewish culture; the establishment of settlements known as Kibutzes where people work together on the land sharing all responsibilities; the profound effect this establishment had on the Jewish community in the United States; with the war over, the expansion of Jewish communities into the suburbs of big cities in America; the subsequent concern about the possibilities of losing the Jewish faith with the integration into non-Jewish society; the growing threat of marriages outside the religion along with many other social issues; the threats to the Israeli nation in 1967 resulting in the Six Day War which brought the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula under Israeli control; Israel's taking back control of Jerusalem from the Arabs in a swift, violent incident; how aspects of Soviet life, such as politics, the sciences, and how the arts, became prominent features with the Jews in that country; how Soviet ruler Joseph Stalin made anti-Semitism part of everyday life once again and imprisoned many Soviet Jews in high levels of society; the protests for the release and exile of these prisoners which were staged all over, especially in the United States among the Soviet Jewish population; how Jews began to look to the future but could not forget their bittered past, even with all phases of Judiasm accepted throughout the globe; the fact that more than seventeen percent of Israel's citizens were Arabs; and the 1979 peace treaty which was adapted and signed with Egypt.
