SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR, THE {ARTHUR GODFREY, JACKIE "MOMS" MABLEY, THE BEE GEES, PAT PAULSEN} TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety shows, hosted by the comedy-singing duo Tom and Dick Smothers, which features political satire, irreverent parodies of topical social issues, and musical performances. Highlights of this program include the following: Tom and Dick get into an argument while singing "London Bridge Is Falling Down"; The Bee Gees -- in their first U.S. television appearance -- perform "Words"; Arthur Godfrey sings "So What's New?" and is joined by Dick and Tom for a performance of "Too Fat Polka," with Godfrey on ukelele, Tom on guitar and Dick on bass; comedian Jackie "Moms" Mabley tells about her visit to Washington, D.C. to give President Lyndon B. Johnson a piece of her mind, discourses about her arranged marriage to a very old man, and sings "Don't Take Your Love from Me"; Dick hosts "Night After Night at the Movies," a program which promises to present "From Here to Eternity," but is so overloaded with commercial breaks that all one gets to see is the opening leader -- the sketch includes commercial parodies with Tom in an aspirin spot, Godfrey for an insurance company, Mabley for the telephone company, and Paulsen for a new seven-month cigarette; The Bee Gees return to perform "And the Sun Will Shine"; and Dick and Tom take audience questions and are joined by Pat Paulsen, who fields queries about his presidential campaign. Includes commercials. This program contains minor technical problems. This represents the best copy of this program currently available to the Museum.
