TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO, THE {40TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW WITH STEVE ALLEN, PHIL HARTMAN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of talk/variety programs hosted by Jay Leno. To begin this program, marking the fortieth anniversary of "The Tonight Show," Leno introduces the new, more intimate studio into which the production has moved, and asks an audience member -- L.A. Dodgers pitcher Orel Hersheiser -- to "throw out the first joke." Leno's monologue covers the following topics, among others: the search for jurors for the upcoming O.J. Simpson murder trial; first impressions of Judge Lance Ito, who will preside over Simpson's trial; Boris Yeltsin's visit to Washington; and Dolly Parton's breast-lift surgery. Highlights include the following: Leno gives the audience a tour of the new set; Rip Taylor pops out of a moving crate and hurls confetti at the audience; guest Steve Allen recalls his tenure as the very first host of "Tonight" -- several vintage clips of which are screened; Phil Hartman joins Leno and Allen and does impressions of Gary Cooper, Ed McMahon, and others, as well as presenting the speech he would have made had he won the Emmy Award for which he was recently nominated; Allen, at the piano, composes his 5000th song and is joined by the band; and Englishman John Evans -- a "Guinness Book of World Records" holder --- balances Allen on his head and later balances a car.
