
BEATLES ANTHOLOGY, THE {PART 1 OF 3} (TV)
Summary
Part one of this three-part documentary on the legendary rock band the Beatles, whose members forever changed the sound of music during the 1960s. In part one, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Neil Aspinall, and producer George Martin look back on the beginnings of the Beatles. Interspersed throughout their interviews are audio excerpts and visual clips of John Lennon expressing his thoughts on various topics. This program also contains footage and audio excerpts of Brian Epstein, the original manager of the Beatles. The topics discussed in this part include the following, among others: the formative years of the Fab Four; the formation of the Beatles; previous members of the band, including Pete Best; early tours in Germany; the addition of Ringo Starr to the band; why Paul began to play the bass; manager Brian Epstein; the charisma of the Beatles; creating the first Beatles album; their longevity; their raspy recording of "Twist and Shout"; the evolution of the Beatles' music; being "working-class" singers; Elvis Presley; why the band waited until it had a number one hit before going to America; the immense difficulties George Martin had in getting the Beatles' music played in America; the Beatles' tour of Paris; their historic arrival at Kennedy airport; the Beatles' first visit to Miami; creating "A Hard Day's Night"; Ringo's brief absence from the band; and the ridiculous notion that the Beatles could ever reform. Also included are clips of the following: the motion pictures "The Wild One" and "Help!"; photos of the families of the Beatles; Elvis Presley performing "Hound Dog"; Eddie Cochran singing "20 Flight Rock" in the film "The Girl Can't Help It"; clubs in Liverpool; the British pop group "The Shadows"; the Beatles performing at the Cavern Club; the Beatles performing "Love Me Do," "Please, Please Me," "Twist and Shout," and "With Love From Me To You"; a fan from the Cavern Club begging for the return of the Beatles; an appearance by the band on "The Morecambe & Wise Show"; John Lennon commenting on their upcoming appearance on "The Royal Variety Performance"; Paul McCartney singing "'Till There Was You" at the "Royal Variety Performance," which is followed by a comment from John Lennon asking the people in the expensive seats to "rattle their jewelry"; the Beatles performing "I Want to Hold Your Hand"; the Beatles responding to questions at Kennedy airport; the Beatles performing "All My Loving" on "The Ed Sullivan Show"; the Beatles singing "She Loves You" at the Washington Coliseum; photos of the Fab Four in Miami; the Beatles singing "That Boy" on "The Ed Sullivan Show," which was recorded in Miami; the Beatles packing their suitcases; scenes from the film "A Hard Day's Night"; the Beatles performing the song "A Hard Day's Night" on the "NME Poll Winner's Concert"; John Lennon being interrupted by Dudley Moore as he tells one of his short stories; the Beatles performing "Long Tall Sally" with a replacement drummer in Holland; the Beatles singing "You Can't Do That" in Melbourne; and the music video of "Free As a Bird." In addition various clips of the Beatles and their fans are shown as the following songs are heard: "In My Life"; "Roll Over Beethoven"; "Give Me Money (That's What I Want)"; early recordings of the Beatles, including their Decca audition tape "It Won't Be Long"; and "I'll Follow the Sun." Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
