ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?: THE TALE OF CUTTER'S TREASURE {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
An hour-long program in this anthology series of ghost stories and scary tales for children. The young storytellers in the Midnight Club gather each week by a campfire in the woods, telling ghastly, but not gory, accounts of spooky occurrences. In this program, a boy named Russell reluctantly discovers his destiny when he opens an old chest at a magic shop. Russell is a typical teenager who hopes that his younger brother will leave him alone long enough for him to kiss the girl he likes. However, Russell cannot get any peace since his brother, Max, only wants to spend time with him. Then, Russell's parents go away on a trip and Russell manages to get rid of the babysitter. Max, however, is not as easy to dismiss. Since Max has always wanted a magic kit, Russell offers to buy one for him in exchange for his privacy. Max agrees to the deal. At Sardo's magic store, Russell finds a chest with a sign on it that reads, "open the chest and win a prize." Sardo tells Russell that some man gave it to him but no one has ever been able to open it. Russell, however, easily lifts the lid. Sardo is pleased and offers Russell the contents of the box, which holds a telescope, a knife, and a key. Russell only takes the telescope which he thinks is broken. When he returns home, he gives the telescope to his brother along with the magic kit, and then waits for his girlfriend to arrive. Russell becomes angry when Max reneges on their deal and disturbs him and his date. Max however, has good reason: his telescope has begun to move around on its own and a long skeleton's arm has just attempted to pull him under his bed. Russell, of course, does not believe any of this and tells Max that he hates him and wishes he would get out of his life. When Russell falls asleep that night, he has a strange dream about pirates and ghosts. The next day, he looks into the broken telescope and sees his dream from the night before. He immediately brings the telescope back to the magic shop. When he returns home, Max is wandering outside in a trance. Upon looking around, Russell sees that he is no longer in his backyard, but has been transported to the cemetery from his nightmare. Suddenly a pirate appears with an accomplice and they kidnap Max. Russell knows that he must return to the magic store in order to find out how to get his brother back. He soon learns that not only must he save his brother, but he must also fulfill his destiny by avenging the deaths of the many victims slain by a pirate named Cutter, who lived hundreds of years ago. One of the slain was an ancestor of Russell's who attempted to seek retribution for the deaths two hundred years before. Now it is Russell's turn. Commercials deleted.
