TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {BILL COSBY, BOB SAGET, HARRY CONNICK, JR.} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. His guests for this program are actor/comedians Bob Saget and Bill Cosby, and singer Harry Connick, Jr.

In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: a park that has been named in his honor across the street from the studio; that NBC will no longer allow Doc Severinsen to call his band The Tonight Show Band when this series concludes its current run; the previous night's high-priced Republican fund raiser; the presidential primaries; and a Kosher version of Coca-Cola. As a feature of his last weeks hosting the show, Carson introduces a favorite sketch from a 1968 show: a spoof of a Western bar brawl featuring Carson, actors Doug McClure, James Drury, and Chuck Couch, and director Andrew McLaglen, with stunts coordinated by Hal Needham.

Saget, the program's first guest, presents Carson, McMahon, and the band with identical engraved pocket watches to commemorate the end of the series. He discusses watching Carson on television on New Year's Eve when he was a boy. The next guest, Cosby, whose own series, "Cosby" will conclude its run the following day, begins a stand-up routine -- his famous Noah's Ark story, at Carson's request -- but Cosby stops and says he can't remember the whole thing. Joining Carson, Cosby discusses his upcoming project, "You Bet Your Life," his son's upcoming college graduation, and his wife's recent doctorate.

Finally, Connick, Jr. performs a song. He then discusses the success of his big band-style music with a new generation, his audition for "The Tonight Show" at age nine, and his childhood in New Orleans. Carson closes the show with a clip from "The Last Laugh: Memories of the Cosby Show," featuring music by Boyz II Men, to be aired preceding the final "Cosby" show. Includes commercials and promos.
