TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {MICHAEL KEATON, MARTIN SHORT, TERI GARR} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, Carson welcomes actors Michael Keaton, Martin Short, and Teri Garr. Carson's monologue touches on the following topics, among others: his high school girlfriend; General Electric's intention of milking John Chancellor's retirement for ratings as it has with Carson's own; the Endeavor satellite; and the death of the inventor of the margarita. Next, Carson recalls meeting screen legend James Cagney for the first time at Jack Webb's house and then shows a clip from a February 19, 1968 show in which he appears with Jack Webb in a spoof of Webb's "Dragnet" series. Later, Michael Keaton discusses blanking out while doing a stand-up routine; the feeling of childlike nervousness he feels around teachers -- even his son's; the tendency for the media to diminish major breakthroughs in science while focusing on trivialities; and his role as manager of his son's little league baseball team. The next guest, Martin Short, recalls the first time he appeared on the Carson show on a panel with Bette Davis; meeting Doug Henning and Bob Hope; a recent trip to Las Vegas with his own Canadian "Rat Pack"; and an unsuccessful sketch he performed on "Saturday Night Live" playing Lucille Ball. Teri Garr enters wearing foot and ankle bandages and explains that she recently injured herself falling down a flight of stairs. She goes on to discuss the following: the time when she almost did not appear on the "Tonight" show because she was embarrassed about a bad review that had appeared in the press that day; movie "turkeys" she has appeared in; her recent underwear commercials; and her bad luck in relationships with men. Finally, Short closes the show with a farewell to Carson sung as "Irving Cohen," a ninety-year-old cigar-chomping songwriter. Includes commercials and promos.
