TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {STEVE MARTIN, FARRAH FAWCETT, THE TEMPTATIONS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, Carson's guests are comic actor Steve Martin, actress Farrah Fawcett, and musical group the Temptations. In Carson's opening monologue he comments on the following topics, among others: Mother's Day; the imminent end of the "Tonight Show"; the presidential elections and candidates George Bush, Bill Clinton, Ross Perot, Jerry Brown, and Paul Tsongas; the Los Angeles uprising and George Bush's reaction, including his understanding of the Black experience through television shows and characters such as "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and the Huxtables; and the new Postmaster General and his innovations. During a "memory flash," they show a sketch from a 1981 "Tonight Show" featuring Carson and actress Betty White as Tarzan and Jane. Carson's first guest is Steve Martin, who performs a magic act as The Great Flydini, which centers around him pulling various objects from the fly of his pants. Martin shows a clip from his upcoming film, "The Housesitter," which co-stars Goldie Hawn. Martin and Carson also mention their favorite "Laurel and Hardy" episodes. They are then joined by Carson's second guest Farrah Fawcett, who discusses the following topics among others: the transition from her role in "Charlie's Angels" to acting in serious films such as "The Burning Bed" and "Criminal Behavior"; her seven-year-old son and his difficulty in distinguishing between entertainment and reality in the media; her fondness for racquetball and boxing, and an encounter with George Foreman; and the fact that they cannot promote Fawcett's television movie because it airs on ABC, which Carson chooses to disregard because he only has ten episodes of "The Tonight Show" left to tape. Finally, the Temptations perform a medley of their greatest hits and sing goodbye to Carson. Includes commercials and promos.
