TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {HARVEY KORMAN, JANE PAULEY, RON LUCAS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the guests include actor Harvey Korman, "Today" co-host Jane Pauley, and ventriloquist Ron Lucas. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: how old the community of Burbank is; getting weary of hearing about himself in the news, as when police recently stopped his car for having an expired registration sticker; L.A. Dodger phenom Fernando Valenzuela's newly-proposed contract; President Ronald Reagan's vacation at his ranch in Santa Barbara; former presidential daughter Amy Carter returning to Washington, D.C. to work as a page; whether the young Wayne Gretzky is already the greatest hockey player of all time; and why the Ayatollah Khomeini is so desperate for American money. In the next segment, Carson appears as "Carnac the Magnificent," the kooky psychic who can ascertain what is contained inside hermetically-sealed envelopes. Carson's first guest, Harvey Korman, touches on such topics as: his height; dedicating his appearance to Tim Conway; why he doesn't really value his job as a comedian; Conway's attempt to disprove the lengthy Thanksgiving cooking habits of Korman's ex-wife; a drug mule that died from cocaine balloons that exploded in her stomach; what he would like to be doing twenty years in the future; the latest Jewish position on "right to life"; and his upcoming projects. Next, Ron Lucas shows how to build a simple puppet before presenting his unique ventriloquist stylings. The final guest, Jane Pauley, touches on such topics as: how early she has to get up for work; whether she is a "morning person"; growing up in Indiana; the smell of burning leaves; reactions to a woman reporting news in a male-dominated field; and time considerations on television. Also, Doc Severinsen does an in-studio commercial for Zonin wines. Includes commercials.
