SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {ALEC BALDWIN, TORI AMOS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Actor Alec Baldwin hosts this program, with singer Tori Amos as guest performer. In the opening sequence, the cast spoofs Ted Koppel on "Nightline" discussing the breakup of Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson with Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, and Prof. Stephen Hawking. In the monologue, Baldwin explains he is unable to express his strong emotions about becoming a father, so he asks two seventeenth-century wordsmiths to help him express his feelings. Next is a commercial parody for Marshall Power Tools, in which members of the Marshall family have been dismembered. Sketches include the following: the Spartan cheerleaders root for the chess team, with less-than-stellar results; in a celebrity parody sketch, Joe Pesci hosts a talk show with Robert DeNiro and punches out Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Brad Pitt, and the cue card boy when they are deemed annoying or insulting; and "Literary Theatre" adapts a Jane Austen novel for television, under the title "Dense and Densibility," about two very stupid sisters. After Tori Amos sings one of her signature songs, Norm MacDonald hosts "Weekend Update" with guest Joe Blow of "Local News"; Baldwin plays a candidate for governor who shoots Lassie, curses at babies, and defiles the American flag; "Fuzzy Memories" features children who pretend to be pirates and take the game a little too seriously; in "Accidentally Shot by Hunters," Cheri Oteri hosts a talk show about people who have been shot by hunters in seemingly understandable circumstances; Baldwin sends his friends and associates a generic belated Christmas card; and naval officers exhibit an unusual way of speaking. Tori Amos performs another song, and the program concludes with a group of salesmen telling tales about their scotch-drinking pal. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include Ed O'Neil for 1-800-COLLECT and Candice Bergen for Sprint.
