Summary

This French-language science-fiction drama concerns the efforts of the New Food Bureau to modify the behavior of an anachronistic gardener living in France in the sterile, standardized near-future. Two food inspectors for the bureau, the headstrong Nadal and his sensitive assistant Hopkins, stumble upon an unsanctioned patch of tomatoes in a small village. The tomatoes are grown by the simple-minded Martin Blanchet, who also runs the Good Plowman Museum, a collection of mannequins in farming clothes and outmoded farm equipment from the bygone agricultural era. The New Food Bureau calls in psychologist Granger, who is alarmed by Blanchet's resistance to conditioning methods that use advertising to create a fear of "unsterilized" foods. Blanchet's utter lack of guile renders him impervious to Granger's analysis. Hopkins attempts to reason with the gardener, showing him a film depicting the deprivations of the agrarian life and the triumph of fully standardized synthetic foodstuffs over famine and disease. Blanchet continues to insist that his organic tomatoes taste better, and he refuses to destroy his garden. The Bureau employs increasingly severe methods to convince him to do so, including slandering the man in the press as a menace to public health. Blanchet continues his defiance in the face of utter ruin and finds a new, fertile soil for his seeds: the imaginations of young children.
