SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {PHIL HARTMAN, GIN BLOSSOMS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Phil Hartman hosts this program, with musical group the Gin Blossoms. In the opening sequence Hartman parodies Charlton Heston trying to give Senator Bob Dole advice on how to be more relaxed and natural in front of the camera. During his opening monologue, Hartman has a nervous breakdown when he realizes he has played so many characters over the years he doesn't know how to be himself. Sketches include the following: a commercial parody for Bug-Off roach traps, a device for torturing the insects; Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri as Ann Miller and Debbie Reynolds interviewing Frank Sinatra on a talk show about dancers; Hartman as a brutal, eccentric drama coach; a parody of the disco scene at "China Club"; and "Weekend Update," with Norm MacDonald discussing the O.J. Simpson murder case, Frankenstein venting his opinions on fire, and a Jesse Jackson impersonator protesting the lack of recognition for blacks at the Academy Awards. Other highlights include the following: the Gin Blossoms perform "Follow You Down"; Hartman plays a cop who uses unusual methods to subdue a gun-brandishing greaser; David Spade dishes a number of celebrities during his "Hollywood Minute" segment; Hartman plays a frozen caveman who becomes a lawyer after scientists thaw him out; Taddli, a talk show host, holds blunt conversations with his guests about smoking marijuana; and in "Fuzzy Memories," Jack Handey recalls sticking his head out of the car window during family drives.
