DREYFUS AFFAIR, THE {THE DREYFUS CASE} {L'AFFAIRE
DREYFUS}, EPISODE 2 OF 2 {IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH
SUBTITLES} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:49442. Episode two of this two-part French-language docudrama produced by ARTE, the French-German cultural channel which provides innovative programming for the European community. This docudrama depicts the mortifying events of the Dreyfus affair. In episode two, the members of the general staff cover up Major Esterhazy's traitorous acts by claiming that all documents in his handwriting are really clever forgeries that were created by Dreyfus and the "Jewish League." Meanwhile, Colonel Piquart returns from an assignment in Turkey to talk with a superior about Dreyfus's innocence. Piquart soon discovers that the evidence he gathered to prove his case has been tampered with and realizes that he himself will soon be arrested. While in his cell, Piquart works on the Dreyfus case. In the meantime, various publications are written in Dreyfus's defense and a former mistress of Major Esterhazy steps forward with damning evidence against the true traitor. Then, the writer Emile Zola creates an article, "I Accuse," against the French government, and he is eventually brought to trial for his act. Hoping that this public trial will force the truth out, Zola is sadly mistaken and is sentenced to a year in prison. Later, however, a top minister arrives to examine the evidence against Dreyfus that Major Henry had falsified. The minister immediately recognizes that the evidence had been tampered with and orders that the major be arrested for his criminal acts. Realizing that his superiors have abandoned him, the major slits his own throat, but he leaves behind a letter that delineates the corruption within the French government. Inevitably, the letter frees Dreyfus from his unjust imprisonment on Devil's Island. At the end of the program, the fate of each person involved in the case is described onscreen. (This program contains brief nudity.)
