ANSWER, THE: SURVIVAL SHELTER (TV)

Summary

This program, presented by the Southern Baptist Convention, offers a hypothetical scenario of what might occur in the event of a nuclear war, and it provides information about spiritual preparation for possible nuclear disaster. The program opens as a man named Ed bustles around an underground survival shelter. Above ground his wife, Louise, chats with her neighbors, Roy and Gladys, about her husband's work on his shelter. Ed gives Roy a tour of the underground room despite Roy's teasing about his what the neighbor perceives as Ed's paranoia. When the evening newspaper comes, the two couples are alarmed by the headlines, which warn of the critical world situation. Nevertheless, Roy and Gladys refuse to take the warning seriously. Later that night, an air-raid siren jolts both couples out of their routine activities. Ed turns on his radio's emergency broadcast station. After hearing the North American Defense Command's alert, he and Louise invite Roy and Gladys to join them in their survival shelter. Once in the shelter, Gladys is overwhelmed by nerves. When she asks Louise and Ed how they are able to stay calm in such a terrifying situation, they discuss the comfort they receive from their religious faith. The program concludes as a spokesperson for the Southern Baptist Convention talks about the importance of religious faith when facing death and urges viewers to read a pamphlet titled "New Life For You." No commercials.
