ER {E.R.}: AMBUSH {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} {EAST COAST LIVE VERSION} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. In this live telecast of the fourth season premiere, a documentary film crew is following Dr. Greene around the hospital, trying to capture a typical day in the hectic emergency room. Dr. Del Amico is uncomfortable with the film crew's presence and she refuses to sign a release form; when Dr. Ross explains why Greene commissioned this film, Del Amico reluctantly agrees to sign. After they document nurses chatting about doctors and dating, the filmmakers prepare to interview Greene when suddenly, a man is rushed into the emergency room for breathing problems. Dr. Greene realizes the film crew has an ulterior motive and, angered, he refuses to speak about personal issues on-camera. Carter, meanwhile, speaks on-camera about the difficulty of confronting a family member who is waiting to hear news about loved ones. When Greene and Ross speak privately in the lounge about their distrust of the film crew, Nurse Hathaway informs them of the stationary camera set-up in the lounge. Just as the calamity calms down, a double trauma sends the doctors to work. Troubles develop when gang members arrive to check on the status of their buddy who is fighting for life. And bedlam erupts as doctors work frantically on both the kid and the innocent bystander who suffered paralysis upon trying to intervene in the gang assault. Meanwhile, Dr. Morgenstern complains of severe chest pains and Dr. Weaver attends to him; Dr. Corday arrives, looking for Dr. Benton to relieve him of his thirty-six-hour shift; and Carter manages to bring an elderly man back to life -- just as the film crew's camera batteries run out. As Greene realizes they must take drastic measures to keep the paralysis victim breathing, simultaneously, Carter's elderly patient goes into cardiac arrest again. Greene offers his aid and sternly demands that Carter call the time of death. Ultimately, Greene agrees to grant the film crew their coveted interview only if they erase the footage of Carter's patient dying and the ensuing lecture that Greene gave him. Commercials deleted.
