WORLD SERIES, 1996: GAME 6: ATLANTA BRAVES VS. NEW YORK YANKEES (TV)
Summary
This 1996 World Series baseball game features the New York Yankees playing against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth game of the series, with the Yankees leading the series three games to two. Held at Yankee Stadium, a site rich with tradition, this game is hosted by Chip Caray, Steve Lyons, and Dave Winfield, with sports commentators Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, and Bob Brenly.
During the pre-game show, Caray, Lyons, and Winfield discuss the following topics: events that changed the Yankees' fortunes after losing the first two games; the potential impact of the starting pitching match-ups for the game -- Jimmy Key for the Yankees and Greg Maddux for the Braves; and the way the perspectives of Braves third baseman Chipper Jones and Yankee manager Joe Torre have helped their respective teams. Following the pre-game show, eight-year old Christina Lynn Skleros sings the national anthem to the crowd at Yankee Stadium.
Game highlights include the following, among others: Braves center fielder Marquis Grissom, the first batter, hits a ball to left field, and Darryl Strawberry makes a tough sliding catch; Maddux shows how dominant he can be without overpowering the hitters; Maddux and Key become locked in a classic pitcher's duel through the first two innings; the Braves begin to get some hits off of Key with a double and one out by Jeff Blauser; and the threat ends with a high pop-up to center field.
Beginning in the 3rd inning, game highlights include the following, among others: the Yankees get their first base runner of the game when Paul O'Neill rips a shot down the right field line, scoring a double in the bottom of the third inning; Joe Girardi hits a deep shot to straight-away center for a triple, scoring O'Neill for the first run of the game; the next batter, Derek Jeter, hits a single, which scores Girardi; Jeter easily steals second base; Bernie Williams hits a two-out double into right center and Jeter trots home for a Yankee lead of three to zero; in the top of the fourth inning, the Braves get some base runners and load the bases with one out; Yankee pitcher Jimmy Key gives up a base-loaded walk for the Braves' first run of the game; the Yankees are leading three to one at the top of the fifth inning; a wild pitch passes by Girardi and he throws down to second to get Marquis Grissom, who was trying to advance on the wild pitch; the umpire calls Grissom out at second and Braves manager Bobby Cox argues the call; Cox has some words with the third-base umpire, who then ejects him from the game; the Braves turn an amazing double play to thwart a Yankee rally; as the sixth inning begins, Key is replaced by David Weathers; Key leaves the field to a thunderous standing ovation for his performance; both teams make strategic lineup changes; Graeme Lloyd replaces Weathers; Lloyd is brought in to pitch to Ryan Klesko with two outs and runners at the corners; and Lloyd gets Klesko to pop up, ending the top half of the sixth inning.
Beginning in the 7th inning, game highlights include the following, among others: Yankees relief pitcher Mariano Rivera, at the beginning of the seventh inning, sets up the game for Yankee closer John Wetteland; Rivera strikes out the side in the top of the eighth inning; starting Braves pitcher Greg Maddux, pitching into the bottom of the eighth inning, is pulled from the game after a stellar performance and he is replaced by Mark Wohlers; at the beginning of the ninth inning, Wetteland strikes out the first batter and is two outs away from victory; Ryan Klesko hits a single; the next batter hits a single and Klesko advances to third base; Wetteland strikes out the next batter, leaving him one out away with runners at the corners; Marquis Grissom hits a single, which scores Klesko, making the score three to two in favor of the Yankees; the crowd at the stadium begins to sense a victory, despite the run scored by the Braves; Mark Lemke works a full-count out of Wetteland, allowing the runners to get a head start on the next pitch; Lemke hits a foul ball as third baseman Charlie Hayes runs toward the Braves' dugout to make the play, but he crashes into the dugout instead; and Hayes catches the next foul ball for the final out and the Yankees win 3-2.
The Yankees rush out of the dugout to celebrate, the crowd is whipped into a victorious frenzy, and in the dugout the coaching staff hugs manager Joe Torre, who has waited thirty-five years as a player and a manager for this moment.
The on-field celebration continues as Wade Boggs takes a victory lap on the back of a police horse. Following the celebration, Lyons and Caray host the post-game interviews and trophy presentations in the Yankees clubhouse. Lyons interviews Joe Girardi, Boggs, and Darryl Strawberry. Acting commissioner Bud Selig and American League president Gene Budig present the World Series trophy to Torre and the Yankees general manager Bob Watson. Torre then presents the World Series MVP trophy to Wetteland. Caray then talks with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
