Continued from T:53953. Tape two of two. This special presents the Houston Grand Opera's production of composer Kurt Weill and lyricist Langston Hughes's 1947 dramatic musical, based on the 1929 social drama by Elmer Rice. Weill's work, distinctly American in tone, portrays the lives of the residents of a block of tenement buildings, particularly the Maurrant family. As tape two begins, Frank prepares to leave on a business trip, but is suspicious that Anna may be receiving the attentions of another man. After he leaves, Rose suggests to Anna that it might be better for the family if Sankey did not come by the neighborhood so much. When Sam appears, Rose tells him about Mr. Easter's plan for her and how it offers an escape from her awful family life. Sam, however, knows that this scheme would involve sacrificing her virtue, and suggests an alternative. In "We'll Go Away Together" they sing a duet about escaping with each other, but Rose asks for more time to think it over. After she leaves to go to a funeral, Sam sees Sankey entering the Maurrant's apartment building, and surmises that he is visiting Anna. Frank, deciding not to travel on business after all, returns home, finds the two lovers, shoots them dead, and runs away. Once the police find him he confesses to Rose in the song "I Loved Her Too" that he must have been out of his mind with drink and jealousy, and that he loved her mother even though he did not display affection. Sam attempts to convince Rose that now is the time for them to leave such awful memories behind them for good. They depart after she sings a reprisal of "Remember That I Care." The opera closes as it opens, with the neighbors singing about the dismal heat.
