STANLEY SIEGEL SHOW, THE {SAMMY DAVIS, JR.} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of talk/interview programs, hosted by
Stanley Siegel. This episode, Siegel's last on WABC-TV,
features "superstar" Sammy Davis, Jr., and psychoanalyst
Dr. Elizabeth Thorne. After receiving a brief telephone
call from Dolly Parton, Siegel addresses the controversy
surrounding his decision to air an interview with an
inebriated Truman Capote. Siegel opines that the
"miracle of television" lies in its ability to bring
people together to share joy and pain as one large
family, and that the Capote interview is simply one of
the more painful moments. Siegel is then joined by
Davis, and they discuss the effect of the newspaper
strike on Davis's current production of "Stop the World,
I Want to Get Off!" as well as the actor/singer's belief
that there was a conspiracy to assassinate Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. After Davis denies being pressured by
the Mafia to end his relationship with Kim Novak, he
talks about the fear he felt while in the hospital after
his car accident in 1954. Siegel asks him whether he is
any good at saving money, and Davis just gestures to his
jewelry, smiles, and says, "I'm no different than any
other performer." Next, Bill Beutel gives a special
news report in which he mentions the following stories,
among others: the sagging value of the dollar; the
police and fire departments' labor disputes in Memphis;
the current newspaper strike in New York; and the
"test-tube baby" trial. After the news, Davis performs
"What Kind of Fool Am I?" and Dr. Elizabeth Thorne gives
Siegel some advice about expressing his feelings at this
"climactic moment" in his career. Finally, Siegel
chokes up as he talks about what he has gained in
hosting this program, and he takes a moment to thank the
public, his staff, and his co-workers. Includes
commercials, promos and public-service announcements.
Commercials include Sally Jessy Raphael for a "Set Your
Sails" promotion; public-service announcements include
Muhammad Ali for the City of New York Department of
Health.
