CALIFORNIA'S GOLD: SANTA BARBARA ISLAND (TV)

Summary

One in this series of travel programs, featuring host Huell Howser, who tours California, exploring the state's diversity. In this episode, Howser takes a trip to Santa Barbara Island, the smallest island in the Channell Islands National Park. Park ranger Beth Fulsom, lone resident on the island, leads Howser on a tour, which includes the following highlights: they examine several local species of plants and speak with a botany researcher studying a local variety of shrub; Fulsom explains the history of fishing and diving off the coast of the island; they enjoy the view from the summit, Signal Peak; Fulsom and two scientific researchers point out the nests, and discuss the nesting habits of, seagulls and other birds; Howser becomes acquainted with the local deer mouse, one of the two animal species living on the island; and Fulsom discusses her life and work in this isolated area. Next, Howser visits Santa Barbara Island a second time for the Hyder family reunion. This segment includes information on the Hyder family, the first residents of the island, who came in 1914 and farmed the island for nine years. Members of various generations of the Hyder family, including Denton A. Hyder and Nora Hyder Rebeck, talk about the significance of the island in their family history and lore and express their joy in being reunited on Santa Barbara Island.
