Summary
One in this series of science fiction dramas about FBI agents Mulder and Scully and their investigations into "unsolvable" cases involving paranormal phenomena. In this episode, Scully speaks before the FBI board and recalls the events leading up to her involvement with Mulder and the X-Files; she questions whether the past four years have even been worthwhile and describes a recent case. In this case, a team of scientists uncover what appears to be an alien body, frozen in a glacier near Canada's Yukon Territory. When the terminally ill Scully hears Mulder's story, she is hesitant to help due to her faltering belief in the supernatural. But after she participates in a medical study concerning extracted ice cores, she is amazed to find cellular material within an ice core. After Scully makes this discovery, she is assaulted in a stairwell. And at the site of the glacier, all except one member of a team of scientists are massacred by an unknown gunman. Meanwhile, Scully's brother confronts her about her refusal to seek help for her grave medical condition. When she discovers that her assailant's fingerprints match those of Pentagon official Kritschgau, Scully realizes that a cover-up is underway, particularly once Kritschgau reveals the source of Scully's cancer. Ultimately, Mulder learns shocking information about the thawed-out alien body and Scully's illness, which undermine all of his beliefs about aliens. Back in front of the FBI board, Scully states that she arrived at Mulder's apartment and found that he had committed suicide. Commercials deleted.
