HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: SAINT MAYBE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramatic specials presented by Hallmark. This adaptation of Anne Tyler's 1991 novel follows the activities of the Bedloe family. Bee and Doug Bedloe's eldest son, Danny, falls in love with pretty but flighty Lucy, a divorcee with two children (Agatha and Thomas), and marries her soon after they meet. Danny's siblings Ian and Claudia are suspicious, though, when Lucy gives birth to a perfectly formed, premature baby, Daphne, and fear that Danny is not the father. Ian is further concerned to note that Lucy constantly spends time away from the children, and he wonders whether her get-togethers with a former coworker, Dot, are really meetings with a male lover. One evening, when his baby-sitting for the children causes him to miss an important date with girlfriend Cicely, Ian lets his anger gets the better of him and tells Danny what he suspects about Lucy's activities. The devastating news causes Danny to drive recklessly and die in an automobile accident. Things get worse after Danny's death, and Lucy takes pills to cope, eventually succumbing to an accidental overdose. Bee and Doug try to find relatives of Lucy's first husband to take responsibility for Agatha and Thomas but have no luck. At Lucy's funeral, Ian overhears Dot talking and realizes that his suspicions about Lucy were unfounded. He is therefore confronted with tremendous feelings of guilt and responsibility for the family's current state of affairs. He stops by a storefront church run by Reverend Emmett, and as a result of their talk decides to quit college, take up furniture-making, and raise the children himself. Years later, the family decides to hire Rita, a professional "clutter counselor," to clean the house while Ian's mother is in the hospital. Much to everyone's happiness and surprise, the cautious Ian falls for the impetuous Rita, and they plan to wed. Includes commercials.
