CALIFORNIA'S GOLD: FOLSOM PRISON (TV)
Summary
One in this series of travel programs featuring host Huell Howser, who tours around California, exploring the state's diversity. In this episode, Howser visits the Folsom State Prison to learn about its history and operation. David Heinz of Folsom State Prison and John Fratis, a retired prison guard, provide a tour through the prison grounds. First, as he enters the prison, Howser becomes acquainted with the thorough security measures required for visitors. During the course of the visit Heinz and Fratis present the following sites: the Folsom Prison museum; the historical Òold castleÓ entry gate; the original guard tower, building number thirteen; the original quarry at which inmates labored over the granite used to build the prison structures; the hangar in which inmates traditionally manufactured state license plates; ÒChina Hill,Ó the large garden that supplied the wardenÕs meals; the prison yard; and the chapel. Included are comments by inmates on the historical significance of China Hill and of an inmate's painting of the Last Supper in the Chapel. Next, Howser visits the oldest building in Folsom State Prison--cellblock number five--which dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. Heinz and Fratis point out notable features in the cellblock and compare turn-of-the-century prison conditions to current prison life. Howser also visits the old death row and the area in which condemned prisoners were hanged. Finally, Tom Hickey, president of the Folsom Prison Museum, gives a tour of the prison cemetery and discusses its history.
