Summary

Through a series of still photographs, video images, concert footage, and interviews, this episode chronicles the life of Madonna (née Madonna Ciccone) from her birth in Michigan in 1958 through the release of her 1998 album, "Ray of Light." Among the topics discussed are: the death of her mother in 1963; her father's remarriage to his housekeeper in 1966; her need to be loved; her friendship with dance instructor Christopher Flynn; her move to New York City; her switch from dance to singing; the release of her first album, "Madonna"; her marriage to Sean Penn in 1985 and their divorce in 1989; the controversy caused by her "Erotica" video and "Sex" book; her search for fulfillment through yoga and Buddhism; and the birth of her daughter Lourdes in 1996.
