ABC PREMIERE EVENT: DEAN KOONTZ'S MR. MURDER {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
Part two in this two-part miniseries, based on Dean Koontz's best-selling novel of the same name, about a successful mystery writer and his murderous clone. This installment opens as Marty chases after Alfie, who is driving away with Charlotte and Emily in his car. Soon, Paige picks her husband up in their car and they continue the pursuit, with Paige confused by the whole ordeal. Alfie hides with Charlotte and Emily in a maze of hedges, then leaves to find Paige. While he is looking for their mom, Charlotte and Emily flee. Then, he runs into Paige and she gathers the children. Marty returns and faces off against Alfie, with Paige uncertain who is who. Paige escapes with the girls and Alfie quickly dispatches with Marty. Alfie tries to climb aboard Paige's car but she realizes that he is the fake and shakes him from the vehicle, just as Marty catches up and jumps inside. Later, Lt. Lowbock and his assistant, Detective Beatrice Del Rio, arrive on the scene and make some interesting findings. Then, Marty calls the lieutenant, trying to explain what happened. Lt. Lowbock reveals that only Marty's fingerprints are on the gun and -- being impossible for two people to have the same fingerprints -- a warrant is out for Marty's arrest. Meanwhile, in Agua Dulce, Arizona, Drew Jr. and Carl meet with Senator Ewald, John Wexel, and Grace Wetherall, all of whom recently learned that Alfie is Marty's clone, not Greg's. John also reveals that Alfie attacked Marty the previous night. John thinks they should go to the home of Marty's parents and try to find him there. Drew Jr. believes there is no reason to worry as Alfie has no short-term memory capabilities. The group decides to rig things so that Marty appears to be doing something out of his new book, making him look insane. At the same time, Alfie gorges on junk food, trying to refuel, before he steals a man's motorcycle. The Stillwaters hole up in a cheap motel and Alfie is able to sense where they are. Marty realizes that Alfie is trying to find him and Paige encourages her husband to try and block him out. Alfie is furious that he is being blocked and thus tries to use other means to locate the Stillwaters. Alfie calls Marty's mother, who invites him to come and see them. By the next day, Lt. Lowbock has learned that all the blood in the Stillwater home is Marty's. Lowbock now thinks Marty is a "nutcase" and believes he may be holding his wife and kids in a hostage situation. Beatrice, who admits to being a fan of Marty's work, doesn't think he is a danger. Lt. Lowbock decides to call the state police and get a SWAT team involved. Then, the lieutenant meets FBI agent Jason Reiling, who has been added to his team and, unbeknownst to the police, is working for John. Meanwhile, Marty is concerned that he can't get hold of his parents. He checks his voicemail and learns that his parents are at their cabin and have already talked to Alfie. Concerned, Marty calls in to speak with Lt. Lowbock and instead gets connected to the duplicitous Jason. After Marty asks for protection for his parents, John decides to plant a bogus newspaper story about Marty being a murderer to flush him out. Then, Drew Sr. arrives at Oslett Technologies, wanting to know from Dr. Roget what is going on with the cloning project. By the next day, Marty is on the front page of the newspaper, accused of being a killer. Marty successfully makes a $10,000 withdrawal but a teller notices his newspaper picture as the family leaves the bank. Meanwhile, Alfie begins honing in on where Marty might be and guides his stolen motorcycle there. Once Alfie makes it to the bank, two booksellers stop him, wanting to know why he is in their neck of the woods. Alfie discusses how the plot for "his" next book is writing itself that very minute. At their cabin, Marty's parents James and Alice see a news report claiming that their son is a murderer. They are concerned as to how he will find them, therefore deciding to drive back to their city residence. Meanwhile, Drew Sr. makes a startling discovery, soon realizing that Alfie is responsible for all the incidents surrounding Marty. Drew Sr. calls his son, who tells his father that he has to be with them or against them. Drew Jr. and Carl get a tip and continue trying to locate Alfie. Eventually, Alfie finds his way to James and Alice's house, and, under the guise of being Marty, tells them that a clone has stolen his life and his memory. Alfie wants them to help him kill the clone. Just then, James and Alice hear a phone message from the real Marty. Alfie claims that the person that just called is the fake, but his parents don't believe him. Feeling he has no options, Alfie kills James and Alice. Meanwhile, Lt. Lowbock and Beatrice try to make sense of how one version of Marty was verified to be at the bank while another was simultaneously at the bookstore earlier that day. Lt. Lowbock finally realizes that a "xerox" Marty truly does exist. Alfie tracks the Stillwaters to a gas station restroom, where Marty has set up a ruse to trap him. Just then, Drew Jr. and Carl arrive, right as Marty has locked Alfie in the bathroom. Drew Jr. finds Marty, who is forced to take the guise of Alfie in order to stay alive. Drew Jr. drives Marty away. Meanwhile, Alfie breaks out of the bathroom and goes to the car where Paige and the girls await. Drew Jr. is impressed to learn that Marty/Alfie can detect the other within his head. Then, Carl sees the real Alfie fleeing with his family, but thinks it is Marty. Back in Washington, John learns that Alfie has seemingly been apprehended, while Lt. Lowbock learns from forensics that the blood at the Stillwater house no longer appears to be Marty's. The lieutenant is now determined to save Marty. Meanwhile, Drew Jr. wants to send Alfie to Miami for more killing. At the same time, the real Alfie is nearly caught acting out of place with Paige, but quickly sings a song to make the Stillwaters think he is Marty. Meanwhile, Marty causes the car driven by Carl to crash, injuring the man. Marty pulls his gun and holds it to Drew Jr.'s head. Marty learns the facts about Drew Jr., Oslett Technologies, and the plans for Alfie. Drew Jr. calls Alfie a great hero, believing he will stop wars with his future assassinations. Marty flees from the scene just as Carl realizes that he wasn't actually Alfie. When Carl goes to kill Marty, Drew Jr. shoots his colleague dead. Just then, the Stillwaters and Alfie arrive back at Marty's parents' cabin, finding it empty. Alfie encourages Paige and the girls to sit down to dinner. Meanwhile, the television news reports that James and Alice have been found murdered at their city residence. Drew Sr. struggles with what to do about the situation. Then, Paige tests Alfie to see who he truly is. When he fails to recognize a name, she knows he is the imposter. Paige traps Alfie in a room and then flees with the girls. When Alfie comes after her, Paige begins swinging an ax at him. Just then, Marty arrives to rescue his family. Alfie grabs a shotgun and begins firing at the Stillwaters, with Marty and Paige shooting back. Eventually, the Stillwaters get a little ways down the road before Alfie shoots out their car's tires. Marty goes to a nearby lumber mill where Alfie tracks them, grazing Marty with a shot. Meanwhile, Drew Sr. goes to the Justice Department where he tells Jack about the Alfie situation, implicating Drew Jr. Jack then calls the Attorney General, who is revealed to be a player in the cloning project. Senator Ewald then contacts Drew Jr., telling him that he must prevent his father from publicly revealing the truth. Soon, John shows up at Drew Sr.'s house and murders him. Meanwhile, Marty tries to crack the code on the computer he swiped from Drew Jr. At the same time, Paige protects the area, blasting Alfie when he finally finds her. Eventually, Marty's daughters help him discover the password and he secures the incriminating evidence against all of the cloning project's culprits. He also finally learns that his parents have been killed. Struggling to move due to having twisted his ankle in the chase, Marty sends his daughters away and decides to proceed on his own. Just then, Drew Jr. arrives at the warehouse, causing Charlotte and Emily to flee. They end up back with Alfie, who cleverly dupes them into believing he is Marty. At the same time, Lt. Lowbock and his men head toward the scene to find Marty. They proceed on information that has been doctored by the Attorney General, thus thinking again that Marty is guilty. At the same time, Marty jumps from a higher elevation onto Alfie and the two struggle. Eventually, Marty and Alfie finds themselves in front of a pistol-holding Charlotte, who tries to determine which man is her true father. Knowing that Drew Jr. is nearby with a gun, Marty purposely appears to be Alfie, at which point Drew fires at the real Alfie. When Paige shows up, Drew Jr. goes to kill her, and the girls. Recovering from the blast, Alfie lunges at Drew Jr. in order to protect "his" family and both men fall out of the mill to their death. As the SWAT team moves in, Marty tells his family that they're still not safe. He engineers a plan for them to disappear into Mexico, then release the findings on the computer to all major newspapers and television stations. Eighteen months later, the conspiracy has been exposed, but the family -- now living under assumed names -- still fears repercussions. Rather than go home, they instead opt to sail around the world with anonymity. Includes commercials.
