CELEBRATION, A: 100 YEARS OF GREAT WOMEN WITH BARBARA WALTERS (TV)

Summary

This Barbara Walters special looks at some of the 100 most inspiring, entertaining, and intriguing women of the past century as determined by Ladies' Home Journal. Walters opens by explaining how the 100 women were selected. The first woman honored is comedienne Lucille Ball, wth fellow actresses Carol Burnett, Bette Midler, and Jane Fonda offering their recollections on her. The next woman looked at is talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Rosie O'Donnell and Gloria Steinem provide thoughts on Winfrey's accomplishments. The show then looks at the following subjects: Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie; political activist Margaret Sanger, the "mother of contraception"; Jane Addams, advocate for children's rights and the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize; suffragist Alice Paul, who is discussed by former Texas governor Ann Richards and former First Lady Betty Ford; and fashion designer Coco Chanel. Then, aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart is discussed. Astronaut Eileen Collins and advice columnist Ann Landers detail how Earhart inspired other women to fly aircraft in the World War II era, as well as leading to the rise of "Rosie the Riveter" and women taking jobs outside the home. Landers is also briefly discussed. Then, some noted female sportsmen are looked at, including: English Channel swimmer Gertrude Ederle; Gold medal-winning figure skater Sonja Henie; athletic jack-of-all-trades Babe Didrikson, who is discussed by fellow Gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee; track star Wilma Rudolph; tennis iconoclast and "Battle of the Sexes" winner Billie Jean King; and "perfect 10" gymnast Nadia Comaneci. Then, deaf/blind activist Helen Keller's life is briefly detailed. Next, the show looks at the four popular singers to make the list: sexy pop star Madonna; jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald; Billie "Lady Day" Holiday; and rock superstar Janis Joplin. Also detailed is environmentalist Rachel Carson. Next, several great "feminists" of all different sorts are honored, including: "The Feminine Mystique" author Betty Friedan; journalist and activist Steinem; outspoken conservative crusader and "anti-feminist" Phyllis Schlafly; and The Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham. Then, several women who played significant roles in the civil rights movement are detailed: opera singer Marian Anderson; legendary protester Rosa Parks; children's rights advocate Marian Wright Edelman; and poet/novelist Maya Angelou. Also detailed is professor Anita Hill, who helped bring awareness to sexual harassment in the workplace. Next, Walters asks several notable women if it's possible "to have it all." That leads to a discussion of Oscar-winning actress Katharine Hepburn, featuring comments by fellow actress Lauren Bacall. Then, actress, fitness guru, and activist Fonda is discussed. The youngest woman to make the list, Jewish diarist Anne Frank, is detailed. Next, the program looks at Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, along with powerful women in politics from other continents such as Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi; Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir; and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. First Ladies on the list include: Eleanor Roosevelt; Ford; and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Then, three "legends" on the list are detailed: First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy; Princess Diana; and actress Marilyn Monroe. Finally, Walters questions several women, including screen legend Elizabeth Taylor, on what they think the future holds for their gender. Walters wraps up the show by mentioning that she made the list as well. Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
