SPORTS NIGHT: CLIFF GARDNER (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about the staff members of a high-pressure, nightly cable program covering sports news. In this episode, Dana comes to the conclusion that the "stiffness" plaguing the "Sports Night" program is due to the constant presence of Isaac's problem solver, Sam Donovan. Before Dana can even address the issue, however, the tension is compounded by an announcement from the network that executives want to meet with the staff to deliver their notes on the program's recent performance. The network executives show up and begin to work their way through a laundry list of complaints that demonstrate a lack of familiarity with the actual creation of television. Dana has advised the staff not to challenge the executives as any disrespect could lead to layoffs. Eventually, however, the pressure in the meeting becomes too great to bear. At the last moment, Sam demonstrates that despite the fact that his no-nonsense approach to running the program occasionally alienates the crew, he truly does have the program's best interests at heart.
