MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2000: SOUTH PARK {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening's presentation is held in honor of "South Park" -- an animated program for adults about the town of South Park, which is populated by an oversexed school chef, a psychotic teacher, Jesus Christ, and a group of acerbic, foul-mouthed youngsters. After opening remarks by Los Angeles Museum Director Steven A. Bell and William C. Paley, Bell introduces the evening's panel of members from the "South Park" creative and production team: supervising and animation producer Frank Agnone II, executive producer Anne Garefino, executive producer and vice president of Comedy Central development Deborah Liebling, animation director Eric Stough, and creators and executive producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone. A screening of two "South Park" episodes -- "A South Park Christmas: Mr. Hankey, the Chrismas Poo" and "Chinpokomon" is presented. After the screening, the panelists discuss topics such as: the increasing amount of dialogue in later episodes of "South Park"; their hectic production schedule and the need for a crack animation team; the job duties of each of the panelists; the development of "South Park" from an informal Christmas video that Parker and Stone made for Brian Graden; the experience of developing the show for the Comedy Central network; the interdepartmental video that Parker and Stone created for Universal Studios; Parker and Stone's great admiration for "Monty Python's Flying Circus"; the program's target audience and late night time slot due to its adult content; the different experiences of creating the "South Park" movie and television series; and Parker and Stone's new projects for the internet. The panelists then respond to questions from the audience, leading to a discussion of the following subjects: limits on the subject matter covered in "South Park"; the performance by Parker and Stone's band at a Sundance Film Festival party; technology used for the animation in "South Park"; the selection of the song from the "South Park" movie soundtrack that was submitted to the Academy Awards; the influence of American musical theater on the music in "South Park"; Parker and Stone's battles with Paramount Pictures and the Motion Picture Association of America over the creation and promotion of the "South Park" movie; the contributions of Isaac Hayes and Primus to the series; the benefits of working with Comedy Central; the origins of the "South Park" character Kenny; the tragedy of voice actress Mary Kay Bergman's death and its impact on the series; and the possibilities of taking "South Park" to the stage.
(This tape includes the "South Park" episodes "A South Park Christmas: Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo" and "Chinpokomon," which are part of the Museum's collection and may also be viewed separately. See T:51726 and T:59739 for summaries.)
