MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2000: ONCE AND AGAIN {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This session honors the romantic family drama "Once and Again" and is moderated by David Bushman, one of the Museum's television curators. Bushman introduces panelists Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, creators and executive producers of "Once and Again." Zwick and Herskovitz give a brief introduction of the episode that is about to be screened. Then the program is screened.
Bushman introduces the panel, which includes the following cast and crew members from "Once and Again": Zwick, creator and executive producer; Herskovitz, creator and executive producer; Winnie Holzman, writer and producer; Richard Kramer, writer and consulting producer; Dan Lerner, director and producer; Jan Oxenberg, writer and producer; Sue Paige, producer and writer; Daniel Paige, producer and writer; and cast members Marin Hinkle, Meredith Deane, Evan Rachel Wood, Julia Whelan, Susanna Thompson, Jeffrey Nordling, and Billy Campbell; and finally, producer Peter Shindler. Actress Sela Ward joins the panel after the discussion has begun. The panelists answer questions from Bushman and the audience, during which they discuss the following topics, among others: the genesis of the idea for the series; the casting process; the similarities and differences between the actors and the characters they play; the actors' influence on the program's development; the writing process; the talent of the actors on the program; the actors' aspirations for their characters; the excitement of casting; the skill and luck that factor into getting a program on network television; the improvisational aspect of doing a television series; the actors' success in collaborating; rehearsal time; and what the actors think of the soliloquy interludes in the program.
