THIS WEEK WITH SAM DONALDSON AND COKIE ROBERTS
{BUSH-MCCAIN PRIMARY} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of weekly public affairs programs hosted by Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts. This program focuses on the Republican primary elections between presidential candidates Texas Governor George W. Bush and Arizona Senator John McCain. First, Roberts reports from Columbia, South Carolina on what exactly led to Bush's recent South Carolina primary win over McCain. In a prerecorded interview, Bush speaks with Roberts, on the heels of his victory, about such topics as: what has enabled him to defeat McCain so far; his "compassionate conservatism"; how he can appeal to Democratic and independent voters; whether he must move further to the right to garner conservative voters; what Catholic voters should think of him in light of his recent speech at Bob Jones University; his thoughts on abortion; moving onto the Michigan primary; and his thoughts on McCain's campaign. Afterward, clips show McCain's concession speech after losing in South Carolina. Next, Dean Reynolds, reports from Grand Rapids, Michigan, on the Bush camp's tactics for the Michigan primary. Linda Douglass reports from Dearborn, Michigan, on McCain's "meltdown" in South Carolina. Then, Donaldson and George Will speak with Michigan Governor John Engler (who is running Bush's campaign in Michigan) and Michigan State Senator John Schwarz (who is running McCain's campaign in Michigan) live via satellite from Grand Rapids. They touch on such topics as: McCain's campaign tactics after his unsuccessful South Carolina primary; how Bush was able to make a comeback and eventually take the lead over McCain; negative campaigning; McCain's thoughts on Bush; Bush's controversial speech at Bob Jones University; and McCain's ideology. Next, Donaldson is joined, live via satellite from St. Louis, by Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley. Bradley touches on such topics as: his thoughts on the South Carolina Republican primary; how he could be perceived as more of a "reform" candidate after McCain's loss; why he doesn't think negative campaigning works; the confusion surrounding his opponent Al Gore's ideology; whether he thinks Gore is fit to be president; his "ambitious" government plans; losing ground to Gore; whether he needs to win a lot of Democratic primaries; his recent visit to Harlem on invitation from Al Sharpton; and his thoughts on campaign financing. The program ends with a roundtable discussion between Donaldson, Roberts, Will, and George Stephanopoulos in which they examine the following topics: how the huge turn-out in the South Carolina primary affected the candidates; how voters' views on abortion affected the primary; McCain as a "Ronald Reagan Republican"; McCain's hot-tempered concession speech; what McCain needs to do for the upcoming Michigan primary; which Republican candidate is the true "reformer"; what Will would do if he was McCain's campaign manager; which candidate has Capital Hill Republicans' support; how the Republican primaries affect the Democratic race; and who will ultimately get the Republican presidential nomination. Includes commercials.
