ARTHUR: ARTHUR'S CHICKEN POX / SICK AS A DOG (TV)

Summary

One in this animated children's series, based on a series of books by Marc Brown, about Arthur Timothy Read, an eight-year-old aardvark who often deals with social and health-related issues that affect young children. First, in "Arthur's Chicken Pox," Arthur battles chicken pox. On a typical Monday morning in the Read house, Arthur wishes he lived in a quieter place before learning from his sister D.W. that the circus is coming to town in six days. However, Arthur has been feeling a little funny, and, after hallucinating about blue elephants, the school nurse sends him home for bed rest. Waking up the next morning, Arthur sees that he has developed some "polka dots" on his body -- chicken pox. Much to Arthur's dismay, D.W. tries to take care of him. Later, Arthur's Grandma Thora arrives to take care of her grandson via oatmeal-in-the-bathtub, "no scratching," and crazy-straw remedies. D.W., meanwhile, is upset to see all the fun treatment that Arthur receives. Later, D.W. appears to get her own case of pox. But when the spots wash off in the bathtub, it is apparent that she has been faking it. Finally, D.W. does develop her "very own" chicken pox, much to her delight, even if it means missing the circus. Next, in "A Word From Us Kids," children discuss what it's like to be sick. Then, in "Sick as a Dog," Arthur keeps feeding his pet dog Pal from his own plate, much to Arthur's mother's dismay. When Pal begins making a noise like a "car horn underwater," Arthur's family has to take the dog to the vet. The vet determines that Pal will have to stay at the animal hospital overnight for treatment. After much concern, Arthur learns that Pal got sick due to eating too much human food: pancakes, candy, and wieners with mustard. Having accused D.W. of being behind Pal's illness, Arthur apologizes to his sister, right before she tries to show Pal her new canine discipline regime. This program includes three show-sponsored commercials.
