CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this series of hour-long police dramas following the macabre exploits of a team of forensic criminalistics experts in downtown Las Vegas. In this episode, the series premiere, the C.S.I. (crime scene investigation) team welcomes fresh-faced recent academy graduate Holly Gribbs to the team. Right away, irascible Captain Jim Brass lets Gribbs know that she will be thrust into the heat of the action; her first assignments include donating blood to be used in a "blunt-force splatter test" and overseeing the autopsy of a shooting victim. While a violently nauseated Gribbs is teased by veteran C.S.I. officer Gil Grissom in the city morgue, lower-level C.S.I. agents Warrick Brown and Nick Stokes find that they have each solved ninety-nine cases since they started working at C.S.I. When Brass tells both of the officers that the first man to crack his 100th case will be promoted, the two take off for their respective latest assignments. Brown arrives at a suburban house to find that a "self-defense shooting" reported in a 911 call looks a lot like murder while Stokes heads to a seedy motel to question the most recent in a string of embarrassed men who are being robbed by hookers who drug them with a mysterious substance. Following her inaugural autopsy, Gribbs is sent to dust for fingerprints at a recently burgled liquor store. After she is dropped off at the scene by Grissom, Gribbs suddenly finds herself held at gunpoint by the store's angry proprietor. Gribbs calls for back-up and is picked up by another veteran agent, steadfastly independent single mother Catherine Willows. Willows scolds the liquor-store owner for giving a new agent a hard time and then takes Gribbs for a cup of coffee at a local diner. "I don't know if I'm cut out for this work," a beleaguered Gribbs confesses. Willows urges Gribbs to stick it out, promising her that as soon as she solves her first case she will feel like "King Kong on cocaine." The two quickly bond, and Gribbs agrees to give the job another shot. Meanwhile, Brown is frustrated to learn that Captain Brass does not feel that the evidence that Brown has collected from his crime scene is strong enough to charge the shooter in the case with murder. Brown decides to go over Brass's head, directly to the circuit judge, to try to procure a warrant for the man's arrest. Agent Stokes's case takes an odd turn when he is called to the scene of a car accident that was caused by a woman who mysteriously passed out behind the wheel. The woman, a hooker, claims she must have been drugged. After some elaborate toxicology tests, Stokes starts to put everything together; the hooker/thieves are slipping the drugs to their johns in a most unorthodox way. At the end of the program, Brown is put in charge of looking after Gribbs. When he gets distracted from this assignment by his desire to crack his 100th case, things suddenly turn tragic.
