AWFUL TRUTH, THE {"PRESIDENTIAL MOSH" AND "GUN CRAZY"} {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in this series hosted by liberal documentary filmmaker Michael Moore that mixes the politically and socially charged subject matter of the evening news with the offbeat, sketch-style humor of Monty Python. Moore introduces the program from Times Square in New York City. Tonight is "Advertiser Appreciation Night," marked by a series of plugs from ex-convicts in which they comment on corporate products they enjoy. In the first segment of this program, Moore introduces several presidential contenders for the 2000 election, and presents the following dilemma: "They all believe in the exact same things." Desperate for a new way to select a president, Moore offers the following challenge: the candidate who will jump in a mosh pit will get the show's endorsement. Moore explains in more detail, "I gathered together a bunch of degenerate, registered-to-vote youth, got Rage Against the Machine to give me a song, and set off across America to bang some presidential head." Moore and his mosh pit visit the following presidential hopefuls: Gary Bauer, Orrin Hatch, George W. Bush, Steve Forbes, John McCain, Al Gore, Bill Bradley, and Alan Keyes. In the end, only one candidate takes the challenge and gets Moore's endorsement. Next, Lenny "The Awful Truth" Bookie gives odds on some off-the-wall statistics, including the likelihood that Miami Cubans will riot if Elian Gonzalez is returned to Cuba. In the second segment, correspondent Jay Martel reports on gun safety. He introduces Eddie Eagle, a gun-safety cartoon character championed by the NRA. Martel decides to make up a better gun mascot and comes up with "Pistol Pete." Pistol Pete attends a gun show in Las Vegas and also visits the Capitol Building. There, he tries to contact Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich.), an opponent of gun control legislation. Commercials deleted.
