STRANGERS WITH CANDY: TRAIL OF TEARS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series that follows the exploits of Jerri Blank, a forty-six-year-old high-school freshman and self-described former "user, boozer, and loser." In this episode, Jerri's Filipino friend Orlando begs her to stop being so racially insensitive to him. Nevertheless, during a debate in art class shortly thereafter, Jerri says something to Orlando about "sacrificing coconuts to [his] monkey gods," and he decides to dump her as a friend until she is able to accept him. When Jerri gets home from school, her stepmother casually mentions that Jerri was given up for adoption by her natural mother, who was a full-blooded Native American. Jerri is shocked, and when she returns to school everyone makes fun of her for being different. She tries to go to Orlando for support, but he refuses to acknowledge her. Mrs. Blank decides to send Jerri to a "Rediscover Your Heritage" camp to learn more about her background, and Jerri takes off for a two-week stint in the deep woods. When she gets to the camp, however, she finds that the camp director is largely ignorant of Native-American customs himself; his classes deal mostly with gambling, drinking, and "smokin' the peace pipe." Jerri befriends another young camper named "Two Bears" and enlists his help in deciphering an old "smoke signal" message her mother left for her many years ago. Eventually, Orlando comes to the camp to visit Jerri and check on her progress, and he finds that Jerri really is learning about treating everyone equally. Commercials deleted.
