TRIALS OF ROSIE O'NEILL, THE: HEARTBREAK HOTEL {UNAIRED EPISODE} (TV)

Summary

One in a series of dramas about the personal and professional life of Rosie O'Neill, a Los Angeles County public defender. In this episode, Rosie speaks with her therapist about going out of town with her married love interest Peter. Rosie packs for the trip while talking with Kim about her love life, wondering how much she should divulge. Kim gives Rosie some romantic advice before Rosie talks about the idea of "the one." As she's about to leave, Rosie is surprised to see her mother in her living room. Rosie lies to Charlotte about her less-than-ethical weekend plans. In the office, Walter discusses why he hates weekends and the country. On their way to the country, Rosie nuzzles up to Peter in his car. Soon, Peter misses their off-ramp while Rosie is nibbling on his ear. When Peter refuses to ask for directions, the two get lost. Finally speaking with a local, Peter is told where he went off course. Backtracking, Rosie and Peter find themselves eating in a restaurant, trying to guess the nature of other couples' relationships. There, Peter is paged by his office, having to get up from the table to call back. Soon, Rosie begins seeing things, such as her guilt-inducing mom taking shape as "Mona" the waitress, making Rosie feel as if she's in "The Twilight Zone." Back on the road, Peter's car tire blows out, making Rosie wonder if the two are being "punished" for his philandering. Finally getting to the country inn, Rosie and Peter find that they have already lost their room reservation. With no other choice, the two lovers are forced to stay in a smaller room. However, Rosie thinks the room "smells funny," like mildew. Opening a window to air it out, Rosie and Peter sleep in their parkas with a fire roaring. The next morning, after literally "sleeping" together for the first time, Rosie awakens to find Peter gone. Frightened, she quickly learns that he has only taken a jog. Later, in the gym, Rosie has another "Twilight Zone" experience when she seems to run into an aerobics instructor who calls herself a "sister," and resembles sibling Doreen. The woman goes on to give relationship advice, before Rosie suddenly realizes that she imagined the encounter. Returning to their room, Rosie finds Peter on the phone lying to his wife about his weekend activities. Afterward, going on a walk, Peter apologizes for being "comfortable" with his wife. They talk about how their relationship is a struggle before Peter goes off for a conference call and Rosie explores the grounds on her own. Finding herself alone in the bar, Rosie has a third "Twilight Zone" moment involving a lounge singer who looks strikingly like herself and warbles some very prescient lyrics. Finally, Peter arrives at the bar, telling Rosie that he has arranged massages for them. Then, two of Peter's acquaintances arrive and Peter pretends that he's alone. Afterward, Peter tells a highly upset Rosie that she is the first woman he has ever loved, causing her to cry. Returning to Los Angeles, Rosie acts atypically, freaking out Kim with her baking. Back at work, Rosie is loathe to talk about her weekend, with Walter realizing it was "a bust." Finally, Rosie meets Peter in a parking garage and she tells him that "nobody wins" in their relationship. Though he asks how she'd feel about him getting a divorce, she tearfully says that it's time to break up. Commercials deleted.
