NEW YORK RADIO: 9-11 {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)

Summary

Made as a "Tribute to People in Broadcasting Who Care," this mini-documentary uses radio and television clips and interviews to show how the events of September 11, 2001, were treated by local New York City radio stations. The program was made for the radio and record industries conference in February 2002 and later aired (in audio form) on WOR-AM and WABC-AM in New York. Radio broadcast clips from 1010 WINS, WCBS 880, WABC, WOR/710, and WPLJ are spliced throughout the program, as are interviews with those stations' disc jockeys and personnel, including David Bernstein, Scott Shannon, Elvis Duran, Alan Nathan, Mark Mason, Curtis Sliwa, and Joey Reynolds. The deejays talk about the difficulties of remaining "strong and journalistic" with the anguish that was surrounding them that day. Elvis Duran notes that the tragic day allowed him and his colleagues to "change the world with radio" while Joey Reynolds sums up the day by arguing that "healing takes place on radio" -- more so than television -- due to the medium's intimacy.
