BAO LIANDENG {MAGICAL LAMP} {#182} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

This dance drama, which premiered in 1957 and is repeated here in a 1959 film with most of the original cast, is a product of the first choreography class of the Beijing Dance School. Based on a traditional Chinese fairy tale, it tells the story of a young god who saves his mother and reunites his parents. The story begins as handsome Liu Yanchang, a young man on his way to imperial examination in the capital, accidentally enters the land of gods at Jade-Maid Peak on Mount Hua. There he meets and falls in love at first sight with San Shengmu, sister of the land-guardian god Erlangshen. Erlangshen's hunting dog, Xiaotianquan, discovers the affair and reports it to his master. Erlangshen goes to interrogate his sister and tries to kill Liu, but San Shengmu drives her brother away with a magic lotus lantern. The lovers then descend to the human world, where they find great happiness. A year later they have a baby boy named Chenxiang. The babyÕs birth enrages Erlangshen, who sends Xiaotianquan in disguise as an itinerant artisan to steal the lotus lantern from San Shengmu. Xiaotianquan successfully manages to accomplish his task when the Liu family and friends are celebrating the baby's birth. Erlangshen then uses the lantern to defeat and capture San Shengmu and imprison her in a cave under Mount Hua. Xiaotianquan tries to kill Chenxiang but is prevented by Pili Daxian, a deity who raises the child, training him as a warrior. When Chenxiang grows up, Daxian allows him to discover his identity by sending him in a dream to meet his mother, and Chenxiang decides to find his father and save his mother. With a long-handled warrior axe from Daxian, he defeats Xiaotianquan and a group of soldiers before the inevitable confrontation with Erlangshen. In front of the cave in which his mother is jailed, Chenxiang is surrounded by soldiers who try to capture him with the lotus lantern. He finally manages to take the lantern from them and runs to the top of Mount Hua, which he chops in two to release his mother from the cave. The dance ends as young warrior is reunited at last with both of his parents. The video version of this program contains one brief commercial at the very beginning.
