HONG LOU MENG: TING QUWEN BAOYU WU CHANJI {DREAM
OF RED MANSIONS: BAOYU LISTENS TO OPERA AND
PONDERS BUDDIST THOUGHT} {#98} {PT. 10 OF 36}
{MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The second of two programs on this tape. Part ten of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel. In this installment, Jia Baoyu, his sister, and female cousins relocate to the "Garden of Grand View"; Jia Lian has an affair with a female servant; Lin Daiyu gets upset at Xue Baochai's birthday party; and finally Baoyu confesses his love to Daiyu as they're reading the famous romance novel "Western Pavilion." Part ten opens with Jia Baoyu, his sister, and female cousins happy to be moving into the "Garden of Grand View." Back in the main Jia complex, Wang Xifeng's baby daughter has the measles. Her husband Jia Lian is forced to sleep in another room, and he takes the opportunity to have an affair with a servant named Miss Duo. She leaves him a lock of hair to remember her by which Pinger (Xifeng's first personal maid) later finds, but Pinger decides not to report it to Xifeng. More days pass, it's Xue Baochai's birthday, and everyone is enjoying an opera at her birthday party. After the performance is over, Wang Xifeng points to one of the singers and asks everyone whom she resembles. Shi Xiangyun, another of Baoyu's female cousins, bursts out that the singer looks like Lin Daiyu. Daiyu is upset at being compared to a low-born singer and leaves the party abruptly with Xiangyun and Baoyu. The two girls quarrel and the disagreements escalate when Bayou attempts to smooth things over, but the whole unhappy incident eventually ends in laughter. After some time, Mingyan, one of Baoyu's male servants, brings Baoyu a bag of "improper" romantic books. Daiyu arrives and joins him in reading the famous love story "Western Pavilion." Baoyu takes the opportunity to confess his love for Daiyu by comparing them to the lovers of the story, but before Daiyu can give him a reply, a servant announces that Baoyu has been summoned by his father, and he reluctantly leaves Daiyu.
