TODAY {50TH ANNIVERSARY} {TAPE 2 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:71126. Tape two of three. One in this series of early morning programs, featuring interviews, special features, and news. This episode celebrates the program's 50th anniversary. This tape begins at the start of a segment in which Couric and Lauer stand on a replica of the 1952 "Today" set, demonstrating the technology of the era. Next, Ann Curry presents the top news stories for the day, including the guilty verdict in the case in which enraged father Thomas Junta beat another father to death at their sons' hockey practice. Then, Al Roker presents the day's weather. Next, Lauer examines how the 1952 broadcast of "Today" covered the Korean War. That broadcast included a taped recording of a family talking with their soldier son, stationed in Korea. After the clips, Mickey Sennett, the former soldier, his brother Bill Sennett and sister Marge Auld join Lauer in studio to discuss their appearance fifty years earlier. Then, documentarian Ken Burns looks back at fifty years of "Today" with his own "valentine" to the show. Next, Couric and Lauer speak with "Early Show" hosts Jane Clayson and Bryant Gumbel (who was previously a "Today" host) as happy anniversary messages are conveyed. Willard Scott joins Roker for a special presentation of the weather and birthday salutes to people who just turned fifty. Former "Today" hosts Jane Pauley and Joe Garagiola join Gumbel to speak with Lauer about such topics as: the first day on the job for Pauley and Gumbel; Pauley feeling out of place on the show; Pauley covering Princess Diana's wedding to Prince Charles; Gumbel being greeted on air by Pope John Paul II; live coverage of the 1994 earthquake in Los Angeles; Gumbel's highly-acclaimed week of shows from Moscow; how hard it was for Pauley to leave "Today"; and Garagiola having been with the show since 1966. Then, crooner Tony Bennett performs "Because of You." Next, Couric and Lauer show some classic cars from the era that "Today" premiered. Couric presents a "Today" moment that the show is "less than proud of." The tape ends abruptly. This tape includes raw, unaired feed. Includes commercials. Continues on T:71128.
