ESTADOS UNIDOS CINTA 3} {NEWS: TERRORIST ATTACKS
AGAINST THE UNITED STATES, TAPE 3 OF 6} {TERRORIST
ATTACKS} {SPANISH} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:80876. Tape three of six. This Antena 3 newscast presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on Antena 3 in Spain. This tape contains Antena 3's live and continuous coverage from 5:56 p.m. Madrid time (11:56 a.m. EDT) to 6:56 p.m. (12:56 p.m. EDT). Antena 3 news director Ernesto S‡ez de Buruaga, Matias Prat, and Jesus Hermida anchor from the studio, while Ricardo Ortega reports from New York. Neither the anchors nor the New York correspondent are seen on-screen throughout this segment of the broadcast. This portion begins with a statement from President JosŽ Mar’a Aznar of Spain, who is in Estonia: the president expresses his condolences to the president of the United States and the American people, states that the attacks call all free nations to fight against terrorism, and pledges his help and support to the United States. JosŽ Perez, a pilot from a major airlines, discusses the speed and force at which the plane struck the south tower, what kind of training a pilot would need to fly such a plane in that manner, and how soon air traffic controllers would know that something was going wrong (footage of the plane striking the tower is repeatedly shown). Newly available images of people who were stuck above the crash site on the north tower, some throwing themselves from the burning tower, are shown. An unidentified female correspondent reports live from the U.S. Embassy in Madrid which is under tightened security. Vice President Mariano Rajoy makes a statement about increased security within Spain, especially for American sites that might be subject to attack, about flights from Spain that had been diverted and landed elsewhere, and that the cabinet is meeting in order to act if necessary. Prat announces the the governor of New York State has declared it impossible to calculate casualties at this time. PSOE leader JosŽ Luis Rodriguez Zapatero also makes a statement condemning the attack, calling for nations to collaborate to fight terrorism, and pledging to support the president in any action that would ensure the security of Spain and the world. Prat then goes to another eyewitness, a Spanish tourist named Eduardo Martinez Robles (audio i.d. only), who emerged from the subway in Queens to hear a loud noise and see one of the towers on fire and then a plane hit the other. Enrique Zimmerman reports from Israel, summarizing the responses of PLO leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. JosŽ Angel Clavas (audio i.d. only) reports from London that the stock exchange and the financial district of Canary Wharf are being evacuated as a precautionary measure; Prat asks if there is any indication that the British government thinks that the attacks may be from Iraq, but Clavas says that the British have only said that as close allies to the United States they may be objects of attacks as well. Ramon Paredas reports from Madrid Barrajas that the airport is on maximum alert and that the 9 flights bound for or returning from the United States have been landing, the passengers totally unaware of the attacks. The station then replays its initial early coverage of the plane hitting the second tower and the images available. The anchors then discuss how the United States and the American people might face this crisis and how other countries who might be suspect will respond. An unidentified female announcer summarizes events up to that point; the newscast returns to the anchors (now seen on-screen) who announce there will be a more complete summary at the top of the hour. Continues with T:71483.
