Summary
The 30th Annual Tony Awards. The show is hosted by Eddie Albert, Richard Burton, Jane Fonda, Diana Rigg, George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere. Highlights of this Tony awards presentation include the following: the company of "A Chorus Line," (music by Marvin Hamlisch) performs "I Hope I Get It"/"One"; Jerry Orbach and Company perform "All I Care About" from "Chicago"; Vivian Reed, Lonnie McNeil and Newton Winters perform "Sweet Georgia Brown" from "Bubbling Brown Sugar "; Michelle Lee, Clifton Davis, Leslie Uggums and Hal Linden perform a medley entitled "The Ones that Got Away," featuring popular songs from past Broadway musicals that did not win Tony Awards; and Mako and Company perform "Advantages of Floating in the Middle of the Sea" from "Pacific Overtures." Award winners include Florence Klotz, Best Costume Designer ("Pacific Overtures"); Boris Aronson, Best Scenic Design ("Pacific Overtures"); Tharon Musser, Lighting Design ("A Chorus Line") ; "Travesties" by Tom Stoppard (Best Play ); Shirley Knight, Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Play ("Kennedy's Children"); Edward Herrmann, Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play ("Mrs. Warren's Profession"); Sammy William, Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical ("A Chorus Line"); Kelly Bishop, Best Actress in Featured Role in a Musical ("A Chorus Line"); The Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. (Regional Theater Award); The Circle in the Square wins a special Tony Award for twenty-five continuous years of quality productions; Michael Bennett and Bob Avian, Best Choreographer ("A Chorus Line"); Ellis Rabb, Best Director of a Play ("The Royal Family"); Michael Bennett, Best Director of a Musical ("A Chorus Line"); Donna McKechnie Best Actress in a Musical ("A Chorus Line"); George Rose, Best Actor in a Musical ("My Fair Lady"); Richard Burton (Actor's Medal Award); Irene Worth, Best Actress in a Play ("Sweet Bird of Youth"); John Wood Best Actor in a Play ("Travesties"); George Abbott, the Lawrence Langner Award for lifetime achievement in the theater.
The Tonys continue as Eddie Albert, George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere host this portion of the show, and Michelle Lee presents the awards. Award winners include "A Chorus Line," with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban, Best Score for a Musical; James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, Best Book for a Musical, "A Chorus Line"; "A Chorus Line," Best Musical. The company of "A Chorus Line" performs "One".
