ON GOLDEN POND (TV)
Summary
This drama is a live remake of the classic movie and play "On Golden Pond," the story of Norman and Ethel Thayer's final summer spent at their home on the titular pond. The program opens with fussy Norman and controlling Ethel moving in for the start of the summer, all the while Norman complaining about his imminent death. As the summer rolls on, Norman grows bored until Charlie, the town's mailman, shows up and buoys Norman's spirits briefly. Then, Ethel receives a letter from their daughter Chelsea, noting that she'll be coming to town to celebrate Norman's eightieth birthday. Meanwhile, Norman gets lost going to pick strawberries and must admit to Ethel that he is losing his memory. The day of the birthday party, Chelsea arrives with her new beau Bill Ray and his rambunctious, insolent fourteen-year-old son, Billy Ray. While Ethel, Chelsea, and Billy go outside for a skinny-dip in the pond, Norman and Bill have a heart-to-heart. Next, Norman finds himself alone with Billy, trying to coax him into reading the "Swiss Family Robinson," when all Billy wants to do is climb the bookcases and criticize adults and their fuddy-duddy ways. Later, Chelsea tells her mother that she wants to go with Bill to Europe for the rest of the summer and asks if Billy can stay at Golden Pond; Ethel agrees. Time passes, and Billy and Norman become the best of friends, fishing every morning and talking about "cruising for chicks." Chelsea and Bill finally return to announce their engagement and to take sad Billy back home. Later, as the summer draws to an end, Norman and Ethel pack up to leave. As Norman carries a heavy box to the car, he collapses. Norman gets back on his feet, however, only feeling a slight pain in his heart. Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
