In this program -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- three great American singers perform: mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade; bass Samuel Ramey; and tenor Jerry Hadley. Conductor Henry Lewis leads the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the New York Concert Singers. Host Hugh Downs introduces the program and the concert begins with several French arias. Von Stade opens the concert with "Nobles seigneurs, salut" from "Les Huguenots." Next, Von Stade and Ramey sing the duet from Act I of "Cherubin." Hadley performs "Pourquoi me reveiller" from "Werther," after which Ramey sings "Le veau d'or" from "Faust." All three singers perform the prayer and final trio from "Mignon." Next, von Stade sings the first of several pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Vedrai, carino" from "Don Giovanni." Hadley sings "Dies Bildnis" from "Die Zauberflšte," after which Ramey sings "Non piu andrai" from "Le Nozze Di Figaro." Von Stade and Ramey perform "La ci darem la mano" from "Don Giovanni." Lastly before the intermission are three Italian arias. Hadley sings "Una furtiva lagrima" from "L'Elisir d'Amore." Ramey performs "Sorgete, sorgete" from "Maometto Secondo," and von Stade follows with "Nacqui all'affanno" from "La Cenerentola." Then there is an intermission. Clips from several prerecorded interviews are cut together. Downs speaks with von Stade, and she describes why she loves the opera house and explains how she got into opera. In another interview, Hadley talks about singing songs from "Show Boat" in an operatic style. Von Stade also remarks on opera singing and compares it to pop singing. In another interview, Ramey and von Stade describe opera singers in the past who have sung different types of music in operatic style. They also talk about the music from "Show Boat" and the rave reviews they get whenever they perform it.

The second half of the program features a collection of excerpts from "Show Boat." After the overture, Hadley and von Stade perform the duet "Make Believe," after which Ramey sings "Ol' Man River." Von Stade sings "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man." She is joined by Hadley and they sing "You Are Love." Next, Von Stade sings "Bill," after which she and Hadley sing "Why Do I Love You." A reprise and finale conclude the concert.
