ABC FALL 1997 UPFRONTS (TV)
Summary
This tape is from the 1997 ABC Fall "upfronts" at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The tape begins with ABC's president of entertainment Jamie Tarses announcing the season's lineup, beginning with Sunday night and "Wonderful World of Disney" at 8 p.m. The family-based perennial leads to 9 p.m. and "Sunday Night Movie," comprised of theatrical films, made-for-television movies, and mini-series. Continuing to Monday night's lineup, Tarses addresses "Timecop" and introduces star T.W. King to talk about his program before a clip from the sci-fi series is shown. Next, Tarses talks about ABC renewing "Monday Night Football" for its 28th season with a new "beat." A clip shows the "Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk"-inspired opening to the weekly football series. Then, "Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk" star Savion Glover and company take the stage for a brief performance. Next, the broadcasting team of "Monday Night Football" -- Al Michaels, Frank Gifford, and Dan Dierdorf -- take the stage to talk about the upcoming season. Next, Tarses discusses Tuesday night's lineup, beginning with Dan Aykroyd's comedy "Soul Man." After a clip of "Soul Man," Tarses introduces the comedy "Over the Top" starring Tim Curry and Annie Potts. Then, Curry and fellow cast member Luke Tarsitano take the stage to discuss their series and present a clip. Next, Tarses introduces "business as usual" with the 9 p.m. time slot and the seventh season of the family comedy "Home Improvement." "Tool Time girl" Debbe Dunning takes the stage to offer a brief statement. Next, Tarses introduces the comedy "Hiller & Diller" before presenting stars Richard Lewis and Kevin Nealon, who briefly talk about their show before a clip is shown. Then, Tarses introduces Tuesday night's 10 p.m. offering, the fifth season of the police drama "NYPD Blue." The show's stars -- Dennis Franz, Kim Delaney, and James McDaniel -- take the stage to talk about their series and present a clip. Next, Tarses moves on to the Wednesday night lineup, beginning with the comedy "Spin City," returning for its second season. Star Michael J. Fox takes the stage to introduce his co-stars Connie Britton, Alan Ruck, and Barry Bostwick, who briefly speak before presenting a clip. Next, Tarses introduces the new comedy "Dharma & Greg" before presenting its stars, Thomas Gibson and Jenna Elfman. The two take the stage to discuss their show and present a clip. Next, Tarses addresses "The Drew Carey Show," returning to its 9 p.m. slot. Then, star Drew Carey takes the stage to discuss his show, do a little stand-up comedy, and present fellow cast members Kathy Kinney, Christa Miller, Ryan Stiles, Diedrich Bader, and Craig Ferguson. Next, Tarses presents the returning 9:30 p.m. Ellen DeGeneres comedy, "Ellen," followed by the highly-rated news program "Primetime Live" at 10 p.m. Afterward, Tarses talks about how ABC is "back," before an ABC promotional spot is shown. Finally, Aykroyd -- as Reverend Mike Weber, backed by a choir -- takes the stage to offer a sermon on why "TV is good" before all of ABC's primetime stars take the stage.
