CRONICA DEL ALBA {CHRONICLE OF THE DAWN} {PT. 1 OF 4} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
Part one of four in this series, adapted from the autobiographical novel of the same title by Ram—n J. Senders, which chronicles the trials and loves of JosŽ GarcŽs in revolutionary Spain. Part one opens in 1939 as members of the Republican army are exiled to France at the close of the Civil War. The narrator announces the story of his friend and fellow infantryman JosŽ GarcŽs; the rest of the episode proceeds as a flashback beginning in 1911 and focusing on "Pepe" as a child. Pepe, the only son of a wealthy family, is rebellious, and he is frequently disciplined by his father, Don JosŽ, for neglecting his studies. He is befriended by the village priest and his teacher, MosŽn Joaqu’n, and by the daughter of a neighboring family and Pepe's first love, Valentina. By day, Valentina and Pepe are inseparable, and at night, Pepe sends Valentina signals from his rooftop, which his father observes suspiciously, unaware of their meaning. Valentina introduces Pepe to her cousin Juli‡n, the son of a politician. Pepe attempts to provoke him by placing his finger on the barrel of his rival's gun, injuring himself in the process. When his father takes Pepe to a doctor to examine him because of "mental" problems, the doctor discovers the injured finger. Surprised, Don JosŽ punishes Pepe by confining him to his room, but Pepe escapes to watch the eclipse with MosŽn Joaqu’n. Pepe next gets himself in trouble by agreeing to contribute his own gun to a fight. Two groups of boys exchange fire with slingshots across the river, but when Pepe is fired upon by men in a boat passing through, he responds with his pistol, provoking the men to call in the Civil Guard. The episode concludes with Don JosŽ very angry with Pepe, and the Guard looking for the gunman.
