GOYA, EPISODIO 1: LA CUCANA {GOYA, EPISODE 1: THE GREASY POLE} {EPISODE 1 OF 6} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
Episode one of six in this mini-series on the life of Spanish painter Francisco de Goya (1746-1828). Episode one dramatizes events in Goya's life from his childhood to his appointment to the Academy in 1780. The episode opens with the fourteen-year-old Goya: it is Easter in Fuendetodos, and Goya climbs the ceremonial "greasy pole," catching a glimpse of the wide expanse surrounding his town. The elder Goya recounts in voice-over this early moment as the beginning of his life as an artist. A visiting cleric sees the young Goya's work on an altarpiece; recognizing his talent, the cleric offers to send Goya to Luz‡n's workshop in Zaragoza to study painting. There, he meets fellow student Ram—n Bayeu and his sister Josefa (Pepa), as well as Martin Zapater. In 1766, Luz‡n and Goya visit the Count of Fuentes who gives Goya his first chance to enter the Academy through a competition. Although Goya loses to his friend Ram—n, Ram—n's brother Francisco, also an Academy painter, invites Goya to paint in his workshop. There, Francisco criticizes his style, but Goya is encouraged by the visiting master painter Mengs. Dissatisfied at the workshop, Goya leaves for Italy where he gains much experience, but also gains the reputation of being a bit of a rogue. In Venice, Goya encounters Mengs again who encourages the young painter to reconcile with Francisco and take a commission for a cathedral in Zaragoza. Following the advice of his friend Martin, Goya also marries Josefa to solidify his standing with the Bayeus. Goya resumes works for Francisco drawing cartoons for the royal tapestries. Meanwhile, Josefa becomes pregnant with their first child, but things do not go well and the infant is born dead. Despite chaffing under Francisco's direction, Goya does make progress, gaining an audience with King Carlos III and earning admission to the Academy in 1780 by painting a portrait of Christ in the accepted "imperial" style. Nevertheless, his academy status does not earn him the independence he craves, and his brother-in-law thwarts his attempts to get his own designs approved by the canons in Zaragoza.
